Election of new NAE members is the culmination of a yearlong process, which began when the ballot was set in December 2019 and concluded with a final vote by members late last month. Academy membership, which now totals 2,590 worldwide, honors those who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice, or education. These may include significant contributions made to the engineering literature, to the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, or towards the development of innovative approaches to engineering education. Honorees also include those who have played a role in making major advances in traditional fields of engineering. Information about this year’s honorees is available here.

Susan Hubbard is being recognized for her “contributions to hydrogeophysics and biogeophysics and the geophysics of permafrost.” Her research focuses on quantifying terrestrial system dynamics, with a particular emphasis on the development of geophysical approaches to provide insights about how hydrological, geochemical, and biological processes interact and influence water availability, water quality, carbon cycling, agriculture, and subsurface system behaviors.

In addition to her Berkeley Lab roles, Hubbard is an Adjunct Faculty at UC Berkeley. She has also been recognized as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Geophysical Union, and the Geological Society of America, among other awards.
