EGD scientists help ensure the integrity of the built systems we depend on for energy, water, and critical infrastructure.

Our researchers are developing advanced technologies for natural gas pipeline and borehole integrity monitoring using fiber-optic sensing and other distributed sensing approaches. Specifically, we are developing a novel electromagnetic time domain reflectometry (EM-TDR) for non-invasive, fast screening of pipeline and borehole for integrity. We are also developing distributed chemical sensing (DCS) methods based on fiber-optic sensing technologies.

EGD is also measuring and predicting many of the natural phenomena that pose some of the most severe threats to system resilience. We are exploring interactions between these natural phenomena and built system responses and system optimization.
