Because natural systems vary on scales of meters, minutes, and even milliseconds, off‑the‑shelf sensors often miss critical gradients or response times needed for modeling complex processes. Custom instruments — tailored and autonomous sensor arrays, real‑time telemetry, and adaptive protocols — allow researchers to capture the full spectrum of field signals, thereby improving predictive simulations and enabling higher-fidelity data for AI-driven models.

The Geosciences Measurement Facility (GMF) at Berkeley Lab bridges that gap. GMF designs, fabricates, and deploys custom instrumentation for Earth‑science research worldwide, collaborating closely with scientists from conception to field use. Its multidisciplinary team pairs field engineering with data‑integration solutions, building next-generation sensing technologies to enable discoveries that would be impossible with standard off‑the‑shelf equipment.

Julia dos Santos Maia Correa Julia is a Research Scientist in the Energy Geoscience Division. Her research is focused in developing an intelligent seismic monitoring array for subsurface surveillance in energy related projects (Carbon Capture and Storage, Enhanced Geothermal, Oil & Gas). She focuses on the use of fiber-optics sensing and permanent surface orbital vibrators (SOV) for developing an alternative cost-effective monitoring system. Julia is involved in the optimization of acquisition and processing flows, as well as in the development of new fiber-optic cable designs.
